Problems with PayPal Sandbox mode

I am currently working with WooCommerce 3.0.1 on a staging site so I can update my theme override files and make sure they are compatible with the new version of WooCommerce, as well as ensure that all of the processes are working smoothly. I have enabled PayPal sandbox, but am having problems with processing test payments with Sandbox enabled.
Sometimes, I simply receive the following error on the PayPal sandbox site:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

Other times, I can log in and submit the test payment, but the status of the order in my store is marked as “Pending Payment” even though PayPal sandbox states that the payment was successful. Then, in the test seller PayPal account, it shows the payment as received, but in the test buyer PayPal account, it does not show any payments as having been made.
I tested a payment for a test product with a price of $0.01 using a live production PayPal account and everything went through smoothly. So it appears the issues are only with Sandbox mode. Are these issues on the PayPal side or on the WooCommerce side? I am just wondering if maybe data isn’t getting passed correctly from WooCommerce to PayPal when Sandbox is enabled.
