Just to confirm, did you try the 2nd compact cart shortcode option explained on the following documentation? That one shows the number of items in the cart:

You can use that shortcode on a sidebar widget for example or near your main cart.

No, I had not tried that. I was not aware of it. I had searched for things like “cart count”, but didn’t find it. That does what we need. Thank you!
