Product download does not work – the log entry could not be added to the DB

Hi,
I created a virtual/downloadable product in WooCommerce. When clicking on the download link provided by WooCommerce, a browser window opens but instead of the download it shows the error “The download log entry could not be added to the database” (this is my translation from German, the error may be a bit different in the English version).
What could cause this?
