When setting an image for a product, it creates multiple copies of it in different sizes (100×100, 150×150, 225×300….). I have two questions :

1/ Why (where are each variation is used?

2/ Can it de deleted (and how)?

As my client have 8000 different product images, the uploads directory have more than 60000 files already (counting for 6go, event thought no file is more than 600kb).

    Hi @brookjacoby

Why (where are each variation is used?

WooCommerce creates different sizes of each image to ensure that the correct size is used in the right place, providing a better customer experience and improving page load times. For example, the 100×100 size might be used for product thumbnails in a product grid, while the 225×300 size might be used for a single product page.

Can it de deleted (and how)?

While it’s technically possible to delete these image sizes, it’s not recommended because it could negatively affect your site’s performance and appearance. If you’re concerned about storage space, consider using a service like Jetpack Image CDN, which hosts your images on their servers and reduces the load on your server.

I hope this clarifies your concern. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

@shameemreza Thanks for the answer! I’ll take a look to Jetpack Image CDN.

    That’s great!

If all is set, I’ll close this thread now, all right?

Please let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help or if you have any questions.

    Have a wonderful day!

I tried the Jetpack plugin, but the problem remains. All images variations are created and are in the wp-content/uploads folder.

But it seems that my theme is also creating some variations, so it’s not “woocommerce” only related…

    Hello @brookjacoby,

Thank you for following up on this issue.

Themes can sometimes create additional image sizes or variations to fit various design elements and layouts, which could be what you’re experiencing. If your theme has settings for image sizes, you can check there to see if it’s possible to adjust or disable the creation of these additional image variations.

You can also reach out to the theme’s support team or check the theme documentation. They may have specific guidance or a known solution for handling image variations more effectively.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

After further investigation, the theme used generates more variations indeed, but I’ve tried with the Storefront theme activated + Jetpack plugin and it will still generates multiple variations (the default ones) hosted locally. So Jetpack is only helpful for performance it this point.

    Thanks for you help!

    Hi @brookjacoby

While the official documentation is always good to keep at hand, from what I gather you are interested in the sort of functionality the WP Offload Media (link here) plugin offers. Found the latter via a web search, while investigating options for your inquiry; for anything further, kindly reach out to its support channel.

I trust that points you in the right direction, but if you have more questions, let us know.

    We’re happy to help.
