Product links in menu not working

Hey there @pglad you seem to have a redirect app added and that’s why you’re getting redirected on these. Also make sure you don’t have post categories of the same name as the product categories. You will cause issues there as well.

But I’d look for a redirect plugin. That seems to be your issue.

I understand you’re having issues with your category links, as they’re redirecting to the home page instead of the intended category pages.

As a first step, please go to your WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks. Make sure they are set to Post name or Custom Structure, based on how you intend to have them set, then save the changes.

Next, please ensure that the category URLs you have listed in your menu are correct. Sometimes, a simple typo can cause this issue.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I still have not got to the bottom of this. I am not using a redirect app, and I have tried the links with all plugins disabled and a default theme with no success.

The products permalinks are separate from post permalinks, and I am using a custom base of ‘book-category’ for the book categories. All links are correctly spelt and there are no duplicate naming conflicts.

I have temporarily gotten around this problem by changing the product category link to a custom # which simply opens a sub menu. I have then started listing the individual products on those sub menus. Not ideal, but at least it works!

Thank you for the additional details. I understand you’re using a custom permalink structure. Can you please try going to the permalink settings and saving them without making any changes? This is a common issue with WordPress overall, and the workaround is “refreshing” the permalinks this way.

Thank you for the additional details. The fatal error logs point to an issue with the Astra addon plugin, I doubt this is the issue causing the problem with the categories, though. That error is more towards images. You should check with Astra just in case about this error, though.

Regarding the categories redirecting you to the homepage, I understand you’ve tried already with a default theme and with every other plugin disabled, as well as tried refreshing the permalinks already, and made sure there are no naming conflicts with the custom category links. Just to be safe, can you give it a quick try by using the default category structure for products to make sure if they work that way?

This is to determine the scope of the issue. If it works with the basic structure, we can continue our efforts to focus on the custom product categories structure. If it doesn’t work even with the basic structure, then we have to dig deeper and figure out why it isn’t working at all, and further tests would be required. For instance, I just tested on your site and saw that the posts categories work fine. That’s good! So the issue is only with product categories so far.

Hi, I tried switching to the default structure but the result was the same, all product categories still redirect to the site home page ??

Update, I actually got the categories to display correctly by changing to the default settings, but as soon as I tried the custom setting the category links redirected to the home page.

I then shortened the category permalink from ‘book-category’ to just ‘category’, and now everything is working fine. Thanks for everyone’s input!

To cure this issue I modified the product category from ‘book-category’ to just ‘category’. But I now have a wee problem of Google picking up the links in the first post I made and complaining about being redirected to my home page. Is it possible to edit the URLs in the first post to prevent the redirect issue that Google is complaining about? I just need to change ‘book-category’ to ‘category’.

You can use a redirection plugin to redirect the old “book-category” URLs to the new “category” URLs. This way, when Google or any user clicks on the old link, they will be automatically redirected to the new URL. This should resolve the issue that Google is complaining about.

Please note that URL changes should be made carefully to avoid SEO issues. If you’re not comfortable doing this, you might consider hiring a professional to assist you.
