  • Hi @mstudioil

Thank you for reaching out — we’re happy to help!

I have products using more than one category, now the URL is show the latest category I selected, how do I set it to use the primary category?

As I understand, you are interested in replacing the currently last category associated with products in your store’s URL, with the primary set for them. Am I getting this?

Just to be sure, is this set up using only default WooCommerce functionality, or otherwise?

The permalink documentation can be found linked here, for reference.

Moreover, feel free to take a look at a premium plugin like Custom Permalinks for WooCommerce, as it can be utilized to further customize the permalinks at a store.

Keep in mind, if you want to try our products, you can leverage our 30-day refund policy. The “Product permalinks” is set to “Custom base” with /some-text/%product_cat%/

I also have “Product category base” and “Product tag base” with some text.

The “Permalink structure” is set to “Post name”

I don’t understand the link you sent me, all I want it the product is the primary category and not the ?latest category on the URL, is create problems with the SEO every time the site owner wants to update the structure of the site and add categories to the product.

Why not keeping the primary category always?

    Hi there,

Thanks again for getting back to us.

I understand that you’re having some issues with the URL structure of your products and how it affects your SEO.

It seems you want the product’s primary category to always be displayed in the URL, regardless of any new categories that are added.

In WooCommerce, the product permalink does not automatically default to the primary category. This is because WooCommerce uses WordPress’s built-in functionality for permalinks.

However, in order to achieve this, you’ll need the help of a plugin such as custom permalinks for WooCommerce. This will help you customize the permalinks in your store.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi @mstudioil,

I just tested this on a fresh install of WooCommerce and I was able to determine that the category used for the permalink will be the last category on the list of categories from the ones you select (not the last category you apply).

However, I wanted to let you know that I’m reviewing using the Custom Permalinks for WooCommerce extension, in addition to Yoast SEO, to select a primary category. Here’s the related documentation: https://woocommerce.com/document/custom-permalinks-for-woocommerce/#section-3.

I’ll keep you posted with my findings after some tests are complete and I have a word with the devs to be 100% sure this will work for you!

    Cheers!
