Proper procedure for changing WP path/directory name?

  • I changed the directory name of my WP installation a while back, and all hell broke loose. I couldn’t log in because the login page was looking for the old location. I couldn’t change the directory name because I couldn’t log in. The rewrite rules were also going nuts, but I couldn’t fix them because I couldn’t log in. I tried a synlink–no good. I eventually went into the MySQL database directly and started editing the options–kind of a scary thing to do.

    Is there a way to do this kind of a change that will not cause problems? I want to change the directory name again.

  • You need to change the address in both places in the admin panel first, and then move the files (or rename the directory, whatever you’re doing…)

    I’ll give it a try, thanks! I had just assumed that would still cause problems because the program would then try to save the new options config file in a not-yet-existing directory.

    For future reference: options (as most everything in WordPress) are saved in the database, and not to any files.

    D’oh! Yeah, you’re right! Didn’t think about that.

    Damn… I too changed the directory name… in the admin panel and then I changed the folder name via SFTP. Alas, there are still files looking for the old directory. Is there a way to remedy this without downloading and installing phpmyadmin? I don’t have cpanel through my webhost.
