    Hi,

This might get a bit long winded, so sorry in advance.
Is there a “proper” way to display galleries from within albums? The reason I ask this is because I have been adding galleries to my site using a Post. My process is to create a post, add a paragraph at the top describing the gallery, then adding short code below to bring up the actual gallery. Works pretty good, and I’m able to add tags to the post, which I think I like (still learning about WordPress).

The problem occurs when I create an album. I can create the album and show it in either a post or a page, but when I bring up individual galleries from the album, I get a 404 Page Not Found Error.

If I switch WordPress Permalinks setting from “Post Name” to “Default”, the problem goes away. Trouble is, I don’t want to use “default”. I want to use “Post Name” for my Permalinks.

Moving along trying to figure this out, if I place individual galleries in individual Pages, from the “manage Galleries” page on NextGen, I then get proper behavior from the albums and galleries.

So I guess the main question is, do I have to place my galleries in individual pages in order to get them to behave properly from within the album? As I work through this, I’m beginning to think that the answer is YES because I want to display a brief paragraph in front of the gallery even when it displays from the album. It would be nice, however, to be able to do this from a post instead of a page. I plan to have many, many galleries on this site, and I’m afraid that using pages will get a bit unwieldy. Also, I am under the impression that I would like to “Tag” these galleries, which I can only do from a post, not a page.

This might all be a simple matter of me not understanding the proper or intended way to handle NextGen, and if so, I would appreciate someone setting me straight.

Any other suggestions or comments would certainly be appreciated too.

Not necessarily, the galleries from within the album behave properly also without a dedicated page or post, the major difference is the URL, pretty when the gallery has his own page, e.g.: https://www.site.com/galleries/nameofthegallery, almost pretty without individual page, e.g.:
https://www.site.com/galleries/nggallery/album/nameofthegallery. Ugly URLs also if the gallery is in a post, because you can’t link to a post.
The other difference is that you don’t have a title above the gallery without a page.
If you want your galleries in posts, you can insert the album in a page, because a static page doesn’t have a chronological nature.
Otherwise, the album isn’t necessary, because you can assign all your posts with gallery to the same category, so you’ll have your category page.

Anyway, the real problem here is that you shouldn’t get a 404 page with a permalink setting as Postname. So I think that you should solve this problem first.
You should play around this, change again from default to postname, save, and everytime clear the cache.
If it doesn’t works, you should try the same with default theme and no plugins activated, to find out whether there’s a conflict.

    Thanks for the reply Tizz,

I had come to the conclusions you mentioned by experimenting today, and started really thinking about how I was going to display the galleries. So they went into an Album for their major form of display with each linked to a page. That gives me the ability to format verbiage around them as necessary. Then, when I need to, I can still pull them out and display them in individual posts, or simply link them to individual posts. Of course, the main Galleries menu item displays all of them with room to grow into sub-albums from the menu in the near future. This way, when one gallery needs updating, it’s done from one source.

The difficulty I think is that, so far, I’ve avoided using static pages for some reason, and thought that I had to continue doing that. Don’t know why except that we’re still learning our way in terms of how we want this site to operate. There’ll end up being dozens and dozens of galleries as we move along, but when you think about it, they’re still kind of static in nature.

Take a look at the site if you have a minute:

It’s a little travel blog we’re just starting, and while there’s not much content on it yet, we’re rather pleased of it’s start.

I’ll start looking the reasons for the 404 errors suing your suggestions. You’re right that it shouldn’t be happening, and I really should find the cause before I get myself boxed into something that;s too hard to work out of. I was attracted to WordPress because everything just seemed to work when I started looking at it. Let’s try and keep it that way…

    Thanks again,
