• Hi I finally got wp to work and was just wondering if there was an option/hack to protect the whole blog?
I want my users to have to sign up before they can view anything in the weblog… is it possible?
I know I could protect the whole directory with .htaccess and .htpasswd but I dont want that, I want the people to sign up and be logged in before they can see anything.
    Thanks for your time.

  • You can always use the webprotect through your cpanel. ?? Then no one will see anything but a blank page. I would suggest using separate user names and passwords for each person instead of a blanket user name and password for everyone. I have been there and done that. ??

A “cpanel”? What on earth is that? Some Windows server thing?

You log into your control panel that your host gives you with your hosting plan. You are on a hosted domain, correct? Is this the same anonymous as in the first post? Why not register, it’s free. ??

Thing is, not every host provides a CPanel… Cheap ones, for instance ??

You can use .htaccess to password protect your site. Just google htaccess password protect..

u people do read the original question?

We are an inexpensive host and we offer cpanel. ?? Sushubh, I did read it and I did answer.

I just registered then, the first anon was me but the second was not ??
I have a cpanel and I know what it is heh ??
I tried the webprotect but it is almost exactly the same as using .htaccess.
I was kind of looking for something that used the member database in wp so my users. Kind of like what pmachine has but for wordpress if you get what I mean ??
Thanks a lot for getting back to me and hopefuly somebody might know how do do something like this.

Hi Lee, I’m glad you know what cpanel is. ?? It is like .htacess, but I personally think it’s more secure. I was blogging privately for a while and used this method with no problems. I don’t really think there is any way to do what pMachine does, yet. Hopefully someone will come up with that soon. Good luck! ??

I made a post about privacy here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/4/2996 (I’ll get around to posting a how to for wordpress soon)
It didn’t seem like anyone was interested.

Sure, you could easily have all but a few of your posts as private, have private posts only shown to users of a minimum user_level, and then make public only the few things you want publicly seen. Everything else would only be seen when logged in.
I have this (approximately) on my site so that the few people who have admin rights can all see private posts between ourselves — a site within the site. Also allows us to ‘pre-post’ public content for internal review, with ‘full site capabilities and stylings’, without it being for public consumption yet.. ??
I’ve posted the wp-core mods needed for ‘better draft/private filtering’ at least twice… let me know if you need a specific detailing, with what user level you want to restrict to..

    Sushubh,
Do not point out quotes of original questions to me and refer to me as “you people”. It’s not appreciated or productive and it’s something my 9 year old would do.

well if u think i was being offensive, thats your call.
i just pointed out wat was pretty apparent. the guy specifically mentioned he did not want hta based protection and that was what you answered. i dont believe even 9 year old who had read the original question would have done that.
again, i am doing wat i dont want. if asking people of being productive is being prejudice then perhaps i can go back to my other forums where people are more sensible when they argue their point.

Is there now a solution to this question? I’d like to be able to get users to login before they can access most areas of my site.
