Protest: no updates for this plugin the next 30 days

  • One of my plugins was recently pulled from www.ads-software.com, because it was participating in the Sustainable Plugins Sponsorship Network (SPSN). According to Mark Riley this is against the rules, which are:

    1. Your plugin must be GPLv2 Compatible.
    2. The plugin most not do anything illegal, or be morally offensive (that’s subjective, we know).
    3. You have to actually use the subversion repository we give you in order for your plugin to show up on this site. The WordPress Plugins Directory is a hosting site, not a listing site.
    4. The plugin must not embed external links on the public site (like a “powered by” link) without explicitly asking the user’s permission.
    5. If you don’t specify a v2-compatible license, what you check in is explicitly GPLv2.

    For now I have removed the SPSN from all my plugins, but I do not agree that participating in the SPSN is against the rules. IMHO it clearly isn’t. Of course reasoning with Mark has been tried, but without any result so far. I have thought a long time about this and I have decided to protest against this injustice. That is why I won’t release any new features or improvements for this plugin for the next 30 days (except critical bug fixes). Furthermore I am asking you to protest against this injustice by writing to Mark Riley at [email protected].

    I am not writing plugins to earn money, nor do I participate in the SPSN for money. The few bucks I got from the SPSN is not even enough to pay the coffee I drank while developing this plugin.

  • I would pay for a Plugin like this. In the meantime I’ll see if I can learn the API and hard code it.

    I read you loud and clear, however I will add my voice to the choir: turn the plugin into a commercial one and I will be more than happy to pay a subscription to keep having the same quality of support and constant upgrades you have delighted us with in the past. I understand that it is very disappointing from WP, but I will say this: what’s more important, being recognized by the software publishers or by a strong and faithful community who uses your products day to day and will support them no matter what? ??

    I think you commit an error M66B, stay with WordPress community and try to find a solution, it’s a better way for you i think and help others people is the only thing you must kkep in mind!

    I’m very blessed that you want to delete all your work, don’t do that!!!

    It is just a recommandation but an honnest and really think of my brain ??

    I have tried to find a solution, but I couldn’t. www.ads-software.com simply does not communicate in a useful way with plugin developers and there you have the problem. I don’t want to be part of such a ‘community’.

    Nevertheless I have made the changes www.ads-software.com asked for. It was just half an hour work or so. Let see how long it takes before the two plugins are back online …

    The pulled plugins are back in the repository, faster than I expected.

    I did also contact Mark Riley about this and the previous issue, so let’s see where this is going …

    looking for a positive outcome for your plugin ??

    I really hope you keep this plugin running! It’s a lifesaver and I’d hate to see it go unsupported.

    For now I will support all my plugins, so don’t worry.

    I am a little bit cooled down now, but I am still a little bit sad and disappointed.
