• Hello all,
Is this a new security feature in the latest version or what? Now on the login page I have this prove your humanity box with a math equation. However, leaving the answer blank still doesn’t prevent me from logging in. What’s the purpose of this and is there a way to turn it off?

  • That’s not a standard WordPress function. It sounds like it’s been added (badly) by a plugin, or your theme.

The way to find out is by going through the standard de-bugging process, so disable all of your plugins, and switch to a default theme, then re-enable everything one-by-one, and check each time to see if that area is there. You’ll quickly find out what’s adding it, and then you’ll be able to see if there’s any settings for that plugin/theme that can remove it.

It’s likely Jetpack’s Bruteforce protection, that’s what does it for my installation.

Jan, you’re likely right because when I logged in to make a small update to my site last night after a Jetpack update, it was gone.

Ok well it’s back again. Is there a way to get rid of this without disabling Jetpack?

The Protect feature of Jetpack is what causes this to occur, and the math problem will appear and/or disappear depending on the current state of the service. It will only appear when the service is not totally certain that you’re a real person or when your site is getting a lot of traffic attempting to brute force your password.

    Hmm, thanks.
