Provide a Setting to Turn Off Registration Notification

For the love of all that is good and righteous, let me turn the darn things off.

Settings -> General. Uncheck “Anyone can register”

How is that even a remotely realistic solution?

If the only way to stop receiving notifications of user registrations is to not let anyone register, then that is an extremely lame software design. I want people to register, I just don’t want to get a useless email telling me they did so.

Maybe there’s a WordPress solution to this, but for now you could just create an email filter which sends them straight to trash.

Requiring the installation of a third party plugin for such fundamental operations is silly.

It’s the WordPress way ?? Not silly at all.

It being “the WordPress way” in no way makes it not silly. It’s a dumb feature anyway you look at it. I’m sure there are some scenarios where those emails are useful, but I can’t imagine many. Not having a way to turn them off is just dumb.

And thanks for the suggestion, fonglh, but, unfortunately, our web mail system doesn’t allow the creation of rules, and we need to use web mail for various reasons.

It might be “dumb feature” for you but many other people find it very useful. Perhaps you can find a plugin that will turn it off?

You misunderstand what I meant ??

Using a plugin is ‘the WordPress way’ – That’s what I meant. When you find a built in feature you don’t like, you use/make a plugin. If the plugin becomes super popular, or WP feels it hits the 80/20 rule (80% of the people want it), it sometimes slips into core.

As you mentioned a plugin in your first post, did you find one, do you need help finding one, or are you just annoyed that you have to use one in general?

Now I remember why I never used WordPress before. Think I’ll put a sticky note on my computer so I never make this mistake again. To create anything beyond the most simplistic web site you need to install all sorts of plug-ins that increase complexity, risk, and maintenance costs for the site.

I understand plug-ins for functionality like event management, community forums, and other advanced functionality that’s too specialized to include in the core platform, but it’s absurd to have to install a plug-in for such a basic function as turning off automatic registration notifications. Someone could probably code that in their sleep.

Some people may like them but that is completely beside the point. It’s absurd to not provide the ability to turn them off so I can decide that for myself.

I can understand why it’s frustrating to have to add on features you feel should be standard. The problem with that is they’re not ‘standard.’ If WP included everything everyone thought was ‘required’ then it would be huge. By being brutal (and yes, we are) and removing things than aren’t used by as many people, we keep WP small, and allow you the flexibility to extend it how you want.
