I like the Publicize feature in Jetpack, but I think there’s a missed opportunity here. When you look at how most media tweet these days, they attach images directly to the tweets. That makes sense, since those show up in Twitter clients inline, and are much more likely to be clicked.

So I’d like to suggest that the Publicize plugin should attach the featured image to the tweet directly, if one is set. Perhaps this could be an option to turn off if people really don’t want it, but it seems that this is very consistent with whole notion of the feature image.

Twitter offers this option. It’s named Twitter Cards, and you can read more about it here:
    https://dev.twitter.com/cards/overview

Jetpack offers support for Twitter Cards, but Twitter doesn’t enable Twitter Cards by default. You need to apply and get Twitter’s approval before to see images appear alongside your tweets.

You can find out how to apply here:

I know what Twitter Cards are, and I’m already using them with another plugin. But what I mean is to have the image directly attached to the tweet. That way, it shows up in the tweet stream even without people clicking on the tweet. A Twitter Card doesn’t do that.

Tweets with images are much more likely to be clicked, which is why you see many media companies use them directly, rather than relying on people to click so they can see the Twitter Card.

I understand now, thanks for the extra details.

I’m afraid we won’t be adding such an option to Jetpack, as adding a picture to a tweet that’s not in fact a tweet about an image is a bit of a hack to work around Twitter’s guidelines.

Twitter does not expand Twitter Cards by default on purpose. If every tweet including just a link could be expanded to display an image, our twitter feeds would quickly become overloaded with images.

If you think Twitter Cards should be expanded by default, I’d suggest starting a new thread on the Twitter Developers forums about this:

@jatin2302 We’ve actually changed our approach on this based on feedback we got from @eagereyes and others. Jetpack’s Publicize module now attaches the first image from your post in the publicized tweet.

It would also be useful if you could let me know your site URL there, as well as some examples of the tweets that were publicized by Jetpack.
