With respect to plugins, do a little window shopping at the WordPress Plugin Repository and if you see something that strikes your fancy download it to your hard drive and unzip. Make sure you read any documentation that may come with it – many people fail to do so for some strange reason and then end up with all sorts of bizarre problems. Once you have unzipped the folder and read the docs use a ftp client like Filezilla to upload the plugin to your plugins folder. wp-content/plugins/YourPlugin
