• When I publish or republish a post the process hangs & either takes a long time before it completes or it never completes. But when I check the post itself the newly edited material always appears.

I assume this problem isn’t serious. But does anyone know what may be happening & why? Is it a server issue?

  • There are at least 3 other threads started in the past 24 hours on this subject. Might I suggest the courtesy of a search first? It is late (early) and I am done searching for, and posting, the links.

Just tried a search w. terms “posting hangs” & found old posts on this subject but nothing recent. It’d really help me if you could provide a link to one of those threads or suggest other search terms that might pick up any of those thread in a search.

This can be related to one of two issues, sometimes both.

    1. WordPress likes to send pingbacks to all of the links that you have included with your post. When it does this, it kindly waits for a response from the pinged host before proceeding. If it does not receive an immediate response, it will wait. Technically, this is not a problem with WordPress, but rather a problem with the remote host’s ability to quickly return a simple ping. Also, in some cases, the remote host may be down and completely unable to return the ping. In this case, WordPress will eventually give up and return you to your posting page, or your server may give up first and return a momentary “server stopped responding” error.

    2. WordPress also likes to ping whichever update services that you have listed in Options/Writing. Once again, WordPress will wait for a response before proceeding. Technically, this is also not a problem with WordPress, but rather a problem with the remote host’s ability to quickly return a simple ping. Also, in some cases, the remote host may be down and completely unable to return the ping. In this case, WordPress will eventually give up and return you to your posting page, or your server may give up first and return a momentary “server stopped responding” error. As a side note, the pinging mechanism of Pingomatic (a popular update service) has been having some serious issues as of late, which are currently affecting its availability.

Thanks for that explanation & also thanks to Beel for those links. I’ll check them out.

After I wrote my previous post here I did find a thread that dealt w. my problem. In it
    (https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/31981#post-182328 and
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/31981#post-182342 ),
Lorelle notes that Firefox seems to be causing her hang problem. She recommends doing a hard Reload when it hangs. When I do this, I magically see all my new material saved & the screen refreshed.

Does WP try to ping links & update services when you’re merely updating a post or only when you first publish it? Because I have my problem in both situations. It also happens when I merely update tags like ttags or meta tags.

WordPress will ping the included links and update services when you publish a post and when you edit a post. To remedy the situation (IOW, to ping the included links and update services only when you publish a post) use Smart Update Pinger: https://www.daven.se/english/wp-plugins.html

Thanks for that tip. Maybe it’ll speed up the post update process & lessen the hang time.

I’m really not sure why wp’s default ping behavior is to send a ping on every edit of a post. That seems overkill.

Well, sometimes users update more than just their tags or a few spelling errors. For example, a user posting about a new story may post one or more paragraphs as an update once more information becomes available.
