Publishing Posts to Subdomain with Existing URL Structure?

    I’m currently running WP v2 and trying to ascertain if WP v3 (MU?) is currently capable of what I’ve got in mind.

    Right now, my WordPress installation is in a subdomain:
    >> https://travelogue.travelvice.com
    with post URLs formatted as such:
    >> https://travelogue.travelvice.com/jordan/a-visual-tour-of-petra-the-treasury/

    I’d like to install WP v3 at the root of travelvice.com to create a hierarchy of pages at the root directory level (such as travelvice.com/questions-and-traveler-help/).

    Is it possible to retain the URL structure I’ve established for posts while creating pages off the root domain level?

    Yeah. If you installed WordPress in root (at travelvice.com), set it up for SubDomains, and did an export/import of travelogue, creating it anew at the new install, that would work. Then all pages off the main site (travelvice.com) would have the URLs of travelvice.com/pagename.

    Necessary to achieve that would be the installation of WP MU + WordPress MU Domain Mapping? Not sure if that’s a core function of WP v3, MU, or a plugin.

    Current and future travelogue posts could/would retain their exact URL structure?

    Domain mapping only matters if you want to run domain1.com and domain2.com from the same WP install. Subdomains is something different. ??

    And yes, you can kee[p your permalinks.

    ipstenu: mhmm, I suppose I was just taking a stab in the dark that subdomain management is a functional part of that plugin. ??

    I suppose I’m trying to understand if this is a core function of just a regular WP v3 install, or if it’s necessary to grab the WP v3 MU install… or if it’s made possible by use of a plugin.

    Subdomains and subfolders are built in to WordPress multisite (what you’re calling a core function). ??

    Multiple domain names are not.

    Fantastic. That’s great news.

    As a final thought, any caveats that I should be aware of with the proposed method & the multisite install?

    Always make a GOOD backup of your stuff before you start playing with things.

    Also, you may have some image shenanigans that will require some .htaccess trickery to sort it out.

    I wrote a post about how you sometimes have to move them around. Normally I’d say you Should NOT have to do so, but since you’re moving from a subdomain to root (running subdomains), you probably will:
