Put in header HORIZONTALLY

What with phones not showing sidebars of websites it seems very very important to get the recent posts and thumbs in the header of the article page. Especially when 85% of traffic comes to the article page.
I have been using this plugin for some years but sure would like to see it able to present six recent posts, three across and two down with titles below or above rather than fixed to the right.
I have a header widget in my theme.
Any ideas or code or something?
