Putting advertisment in the sidebar – What should I use?

    I want to put a HTML code into the sidebar to show an advertisement for a product I want to sell. I know there is a plug in or widget or something that will enable this. What is it? Also, can I put a graphics ad in the middle of my blog post, and how? Thanks
