Query based on User's List Pick

Hi, I’m curious if / how I can run a category query based on a category selected by a site visitor.

Basically I have 5 categories that should be treated as separate queries on the homepage widget.

The category that gets queried and displayed in the widget should be based on the category selection by the user on the homepage. (I am hoping to provide the site visitor with a drop-down category filter).

Can this be done? If so, I’d appreciate guidance on how to do this.
