I received a message from one of the moderators that a post I made had been removed because it wasn’t a tech support question.

Indeed – my post was information I though might be helpful to others involved in self hosting. (i.e. “localhost” – in the name of this forum)

There is a check box below: “This topic is not a support question.” I’m pretty sure I checked that box.

So I need some guidance please on the proper usage of this forum. I thought it might be a place to exchange information as well as seek assistance. If I am wrong and missed that instruction – I apologize.

Regardless – perhaps someone can tell me what sort of topic might be appropriate when checking the “This topic is not a support question” box.

    Many thanks.

So, the issue is whether you’re blogging or asking for support or replying to another’s support question. Your post, a reply to a question not asked (or one you asked yourself offline) falls into the blog category.

The purpose of the “this is not a support question” is to support questions that would’t get a “resolved” checkmark when done. IMHO, it’s kind of pointless in the general forums.

https://wptavern.com/ accepts guest bloggers. You could try there ??
Also, we are working on a 2020 Content Marketing Strategy for www.ads-software.com, so we may be accepting blog submissions for that starting soon.

Thank you for your reply Steve Stern.

I’m happy to follow the rules – as long as I know what they are.

There are quite a few FaceBook groups regarding WordPress – It perhaps might be something to share there.

I’ve used WordPress for 10 years, but I’m just now getting into self-hosting – and as this increases my need for information, I’m trying to make an effort to find the best avenues to do so.

I’ve participated in many other technical disciplines that make good use of information exchange services. (And some old ones still using listserv.) There always seems to be a distribution of experience levels. We were all beginners once – something I like to keep in mind when I participate.

I’ve done a bit of blogging (though not recently), more or less on the topic of “things I’ve learned as I try to build WP sites and serves to host them.” Those inform my responses here. Perhaps we need a forum-ish thing with a topic like that, but quite frankly, I suspect it would lead to a lot of spam or folks using the reach of the wp.org forums to promote their own sites and services. So, at least as I conceive it, have your answers available and look for topics on which to deploy them. If you hit someone’s question perfectly, they’re eternally grateful.

I’m new here – so I appeal to the more experienced WordPress community for what’s helpful and appropriate.

I always conduct a through search for answers before asking questions – to avoid wasting time.

And when I volunteer information, it’s because it’s something I suspect is useful to others and I’ve not seen mention of elsewhere.

But no doubt – if the information channels get clogged with less useful information – they lose their purpose. It’s about balance.
