Wordpress 4.8 has now been released, with its own image widget.

Simple question: what features (if any) does this plugin offer that beyond the native widget application of WP 4.8?

I understand that for for preserving images on an already developed site that the plugin would need to be retained — but for new site development is their continued value in using this plugin?

Or have the WordPress developers simply finally caught up and are now providing the function that was the reason this widget was valuable in the past?

  • Hi, @abigailm.

This is a timely and insightful question; kudos!

The new image widget that’s part of WP core now does not have as many customizations as our Image Widget plugin. You can view https://cl.ly/081L102O283P for a visual comparison.

Technically, the alt, title, and link settings available in our Image Widget plugin are able to be set at the image file’s Media Library settings, but then it’s set site-wide instead of only for the scope of this single widget displaying this image like this.

Our paid Image Widget Plus plugin allows you to select multiple images, not just one, and has slideshow options and other settings.

I hope this clears things up for you. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions on this topic.
