• Hello,

I’m using the Talian 1.0 theme. When viewing a post, there is a line that says “Follow-up <u>comment rss</u> or Leave a <u>Trackback</u> “. Neither link works. The “comment rss” link points at a feed folder and the “trackback” link points at a trackback folder.

Could someone help me understand what I need to do to set this up so these links work? Thanks!

  • Have you changed your Permalinks to somethings besides the default yet? (visit Options -> Permalinks)

I’d wager once you do, those links will work as expected.

Thanks for replying, HandySolo. Sorry, I should’ve provided more information first time around. When I’m looking at a post and click on the “comment rss” link, I get the following page displayed:

Internet Explorer cannot display this feed

    This feed contains code errors.
Go back to the previous page.

    More information

    Invalid xml declaration.
    Line: 2 Character: 3

    <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?><rss version=”2.0″

In answer to your question, I had previously changed my PermaLinks. I have them set to “Day and Name”. Still getting the error page.

I’d sure appreciate any add’l help. Thanks!

A link may be helpful, but I think I can guess that your issue is space related.

Somewhere, perhaps in your wp-config.php or a plugin’s php file, you have whitespace where it shouldn’t be.

Open up any suspected or recently added/changed files and make sure that there is nothing before the opening <?php or after the final ?> tags.

Hi, I just downloaded this template and for sure haven’t edited wp-config.php or any plugin php files. Actually, I’m not even sure how to get at them to edit them. Would that be a matter of ftp and notepad?

Here’s a link to the page where the comment rss & trackback links are:
https://blog.marksalinas.com/2008/05/22/celery/. If haven’t done anything special to “turn on” the rss feed or trackbacks.

If you could take a look and give any other suggestions I’d appreciate it! Thanks very much for your time.

I just edited some of the .php files and didn’t see any whitespace as you suggested. I checked wp-config, wp-feed, wp-trackback, wp-commentsrss2 and functions.

Does the theme have a functions.php file? You might check that one as well.

Also, humor me. Temporarily try a different theme — perhaps Default. Does the problem persist or go away?

I did check functions.php earlier. I don’t see any whitespace.

I switched to Default and I get the exact same error when clicking on the RSS 2.0 link.

The trackback link doesn’t give an error. Doesn’t do anything but re-display the page. Shouldn’t it ask me which blog I want to send the trackback to, or does it auto scan the post and send the trackback to any blogs mentioned in the post? Thanks again for your help.

Ok, I think I understand that the trackback link is really not for “clicking and doing something”, but just so that some other 3rd party can access my trackback url. (3rd party right clicks on the trackback link, copies the url, uses it when posting on their blog which then sends me a trackback post) Is that correct?

If so, then I guess my only confusion is the comments rss link and the error I get when I click on the link. Thank you again.

Your feed definitely has a blank line (at the top) coming from somewhere. If it is still there after you changed themes, then you must have it in wp-config.php or a plugin.

So, if you disable all plugins, does the problem persist? Maybe disable one by one to try and track it down?

I disabled Akismet, the only plugin that was installed. No change.

I then took another look at each of the .php files. I realized that the wp-config file did indeed have an extra line of blank space at the end of the file. I deleted the line and now the rss feed works.

HandySolo, Thanks so much for your assistance!

    Hi!
I am very new to building my site and using wordpress 2.7.

    Someone please help meeee!!

I have a problem with my comments (rss) link on my website (the link is at the bottom of my page) – yellowanswer.com

I don’t know what plugins are, yet. I haven’t plugin anything. I have been using wordpress through my hosting site and creating my site like that. So that means I haven’t downloaded wordpress onto my computer. Anyhow, how do I fix my problem with the comment (rss) link not working?

Where would I be able to find config.php
I cannot find it listed in my themes files
