    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Hi Matthias!

I’ve been using the ActivityPub plugin for a few weeks (thanks a lot for your work on this!) and would have a question about it. It may be a stupid question ??

When I publish a new post, it gets pushed to my followers on the Fediverse. They can interact with that post just like they would with a regular post published via another ActivityPub client like Mastodon: they can favorite, boost, and reply. In the example below (link here), my post got 2 boosts and a reply.

Can my WordPress instance, via the ActivityPub plugin, receive those actions?

Ideally, I would expect such actions to be received and displayed just like webmentions. Maybe I could even reply to them like I would reply to a comment, and my reply would be pushed to the person I am interacting. When I first installed ActivityPub on my site, I noticed this GitHub PR that talked about “threaded comments”. It had me think that the plugin already supported ActivityPub actions inside comments to some extent. I realized with that first interaction on that post of mine that it wasn’t the case. Do you think that’s something that could eventually be possible? How many of those action types do you think could be supported with WordPress?

    Thank you!

I just checked my spam and found the comment coming from Mastodon there, so there goes the first part of my stupid question ?? It turns out comment interactions do get back to the site!

Hey @jeherve it is like you said, it can receive comments and we are working on threaded comments support, so that comments on mastodon will be showed threaded and comments made on the blogs side can also be federated (which is not that easy, because only posts from site owners can be federated and that might defragment break the discussion). There is currently no boost or like support, because I have no idea how to display them nicely atm. But we are working on a lightweight comment-type support for the Webmention plugin so maybe I can share some code between both plugins. Thanks for your support so far!

I absolutely recognise that this is indeed a difficult problem, but just to throw in my penny – this would be probably number one on my features list. Because otherwise there’s just not really good ways to participate in discussions happening off-blog.

(It’s between that and stronger defederation support, but I think this wins.)
