Questions about Posts within Templates and Pages

Hello,

I have started work on creating my own template using Tessa Blakeley Silver’s book called WordPress Theme Design.

One problem I am having is that where my posts are displayed the text does not wrap around the image like it does when I use another theme. Is there a setting that needs to be set to allow this to happen.

The other question relates to creating pages. In a template that works properly I am able to create a page and then see that page within horizontal menu. How do I set this behavior within the WordPress template.
