• Hello,

Before downloading this plug in, I have some questions. Can you please help me understand..

    – What is a good standard for optimal image size? Does this tool have a target kb or reduction % it aims for?
    – How does this tool know how low to smush without losing quality?
    – Can sizes be set for images that will be used differently on the site, like a product photo versus a banner photo?
    – Will we need to continue to compress/optimize images in advance of uploading them and compressing them? Do we need to worry about an image being over smushed?
    – Are there file types that this will not compress?
    – Will multiple versions be created in the media gallery after they are uploaded, converted file type and compressed?

    Curious,
    Jennifer

Our standard is to make an image as small as possible without losing quality. As such, there is no target filesize or %. Typically, larger files see more savings (even as a %), and smaller files see less savings.
How does this tool know how low to compress? The free mode uses open-source utilities like jpegtran, optipng, gifsicle, and pnquant. Our premium API uses proprietary technology for which we cannot disclose any details like that. It gets complicated quickly…
Generating various sizes of an image is something WordPress already does by default, and many themes/plugins extend that. If you need more sizes generated than what you currently have available, a good plugin to try is Simple Image Sizes.
The main purpose of this plugin is to make it so you don’t need to optimize an image in advance. And no image should ever be over-smushed (though anything is possible when dealing with a variable medium like images).
We support JPG, PNG, GIF, and PDF.
And again, WordPress already creates multiple versions of your image in the media gallery, the EWWW Image Optimizer does not. It DOES allow you to control which of those sizes are optimized, or even disable their creation altogether.
