I’m ready to upgrade (hopefully) from 2.02. to 2.04
    I’ve done all the back-ups.
I’ve downloaded and unzipped the files on my harddrive into a WordPress directory, with the three upgrade subdirectories under it.

The Codex gives two options: (1) to upload directly to my site, overwriting all the files there. (2) to delete the old files on the server first, and then upload.

Any opinions which I should chose?

If I opt for (1) – and my directory is ROOT/jayjerome.com (where all the wp files are located) do I go directly to ROOT and upload it there?

If I opt for (2) – the Codex has a list of files and folder NOT to delete. Among them a folder named wp-images – but I don’t seem to have an image folder with that name in any directory or sub directory. There is an ‘images’ directory in wp-includes with ‘smilies’ in it; and an ‘images’ directory in wp-admin with boxes and logos – are either of those the one the Codex means?

After I upload the new files the Codex says I have to run the WordPress ‘upgrade script’ and tells me to visit my blog’s Upgrade Page and follow the instructions – sending me to
    ‘https://example.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php’

This is confusing. Is ‘example.com’ my web address? I tried that, substituting my web address, and was directed to my blog’s front page – does that mean the upgrade script will automatically be installed when I upload the new files?

Sorry to be so long-winded — but the instructions are somewhat ambiguous…

  • I always prefer to delete them: except the config file, .htaccess and wp-content dir.

The wp-images is a pre-1.5 folder; if you’ve never had an 1.2 version, you don’t have it.

example.com is a universal replacement for whatever is your domain. And if you have the WP installed in the root (i.e. NOT in a subfolder), than you should leave out the “/wordpress/” part > example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php

your root is what you call “ROOT/jayjerome.com” – you should never have anything outside of it. Upload new files exactly where old ones used to be, don’t over-compliacte ??

Sorry to be so obtuse on this stuff. The original wordpress instalation was automatically set up when I signed up for my domain, and not being much of a techie, I’m kinda feeling my way along here.

One more ‘novice’ question about uploading the new files. When I unzipped the upgrade, it defaulted to this directory tree:
    wordpress/
    wp-admin
    wp-content
    wp-includes
But in the original set-up, as stated above, on the domain its:
    ROOT/jayjerome.com/
    wp-admin
    wp-content
    wp-includes

When I upload the new files, can I change the directory name on my harddrive from ‘wordpress’ to ‘jayjerome.com’ and copy it all in one operation; or do I have to individually copy the files in each directory to the existing directories on the domain?

As I said, try to follow the instructions, and don’t think too much (it makes wrinkles…)

You don’t “copy” the files: you use your FTP client/program to upload the files from your computer to your server.

FTP has two windows, showing folders and files on your computer and on the server.
On your side should be open the “wordpress” folder and you should see the 3 folders you mentioned + a bunch of files.

Now on the computer side open the jayjerome.com folder, with the files/folder deleted as instructed.

Select all the folders and files on your compuer. Click upload.
Go and have a relaxing drink until the files get up to your server ??

FWIW I agree with moshu’s I always prefer to delete them. I have seen many more failed/corrupt uploads due to existing files on the server then when there are none.

trying to activate my plug-ins and getting on each of them a similiar message to this one:
‘..Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’ in /home/.keebler/postave/jayjerome.com/wp-content/plugins/akismet/akismet.php on line 305′
