Rackspace Cloud Sites & WordPress Multisite

  • I’ve been working for about a week on a WordPress Multisite hosted under the Rackspace Cloud Sites infrastructure. Initially, I was told repeatedly by Rackspace Customer Support that WordPress Multisite is supported, but they don’t support Wildcard subdomains, so it seemed possible albeit difficult.

    I’ve now received word from a higher level technician that Rackspace does “not support the coding or configuration of WordPress MU itself.”

    It would seem that Rackspace is the best possible solution for a medium sized network of blogs, the scalability primarily. I was set on Rackspace. Still am.

    Does anyone have a functioning Multisite network on any Rackspace infrastructure? If so, do you have domain mapping functioning as well?

  • I do know people running multisite successfully on the rackspace cloud.

    having said that- not a fan of any cloud for running multisite. Just too picky when trying to set up fun stuff like domain mapping.

    This usually means they won’t help you with questions specific to multisite.

    Subfolders should still works – subdomains and wildcard domains have NOTHING to do with domain mapping itself (which works fine with subfolder blogs).

    I’m looking to run MU on Cloud Sites as well. The post on snipe.net mentioned above looks good, though a lot of people seem to be stuck at the mod_rewrite stuff.

    I’ll post back here with results as I progress.

    Anyone have any updates on their work? We’re looking to launch a MU install for a client and want to know what were getting into if we put on our Cloud Hosting. ??

    Mixed results. I’m not a fan, but others swear by it.

    (and it;s not MU any more. ?? )

    I am running a Multisite/Buddpress installation on a Rackspace Cloud Server, with their Cloud Files service providing the CDN (together with Akamai). There really hasn’t been any additional complexity compared to running on a dedicated server and I run both single-site and multi-sites on this same server instance.

    I also have another site running on Amazon S3 (a Django/Python site rather than WordPress) and that’s had numerous outages and problems whilst my Rackspace Cloud Server has remained completely hassle free.

    I moved to a Rackspace cloud server after numerous fatal disk failures on the managed servers I used to run and I haven’t looked back.

    I’ve setup multisite using Rackspace Cloud Sites and managed to get domain mapping working. The trick is to use WPMU’s domain mapping plugin.

    Their plugin works the same as the free one.

    You would need to do that same exact step at Rackspace regardless of which domain mapping plugin you use.

    Could you write somewhere how to setup Cloud Files for storage & delivery of user files and uploads? I’m about to get Cloud Servers VPS and setup a WP network to replace one horrible symlink-Joomla configuration for multiple sites.

    Do you recommend some image from Cloud servers? Do you use Webmin or something control panel?

    I’ve installed WP Network on could hosting (Rackspace) I’ve also installed domain name mapping. Setting up the new domain to point to the sub directory is where I have problems/not sure how to do it.

    Anyone can list the steps for domain name mapping a domain name to a sub-directory web blog on Rackspace please.

    You don’t. You point it to the MAIN install of WordPress and let WP parse it.

    Though at this point, you should open your own topic, since this was about getting WP up and running on cloud and YOURS is about domain mapping.
