    I was just working with this site yesterrday. Sat down to continue the work and saw the update. Ran the update, it went into maintenance mode – fine, ok. Killed that maint file on the server, logged onto the server to give the directory full permissions. Went back into my WP admin and ran the auto update again. Said it completed fine but when I went to the front end it just does NOTHING (in IE).

    Firefox gives me this error… “Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”

    I tried running the auto install a few times, all ‘completed’ – then I even went in and reverted back to the stock 2010 theme. Still nothing.

    Does anybody amongst WP’s development crew do any cross-platform testing? It sure doesn’t seem like it

    Yes they do. Did you help?

    get the previous version you were running, then unzip it … copy everything but the wp-content folder to where ever your WP folder/files are … and when you go to open your site-admin it may tell you it needs to do a database update click ok to that and bam every thing is back up and running.

    good luck. I did exactly that after turning a few hairs gray and I got my wp back up. I hope this helps.

    Totally agree w/you, rvirtue, as I said on another thread.

    Anyone on Windows will be screwed, with hours of extra work, not knowing anything about an extra plug-in, etc. Which I have never needed for like 16 other versions, btw, so something needs to be fixed badly on 3.1.

    Hi Guys

    I had a brandnew install of WP on Windows platform and I received the same Too Many Redirects error. I could however access the wp-admin dashboard but main site didnt load.

    I installed the Permalink Fix & Disable Canonical Redirects Pack using the plugins install in the wp-admin panel and activated it. Main site now load properly!. ??

    Awesome, this totally worked for me, you guys ROCK: ESMI, AardvarkGirl, and scythe944!!!

    Just to be super clear, I have Windows hosting through a 3rd Party host and when I updated to WordPress 3.1, I got the following error when I went to my home page:

    This webpage has a redirect loop
    The webpage at <my site> has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

    Here are the steps I took to solve this problem:

    1. Go to the WP admin page at: https://<your site name>/wp-admin/ (it should still work, even if your home page doesn't).
    2. Login and go to the Plug-ins admin page.
    3. Install and activate the "Permalink Fix & Disable Canonical Redirects Pack" plugin (at https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/permalink-fix-disable-canonical-redirects-pack/).
    4. Go back to your homepage, it should work!

    Anyway, thanks again everyone for helping me with this problem!!! You guys are AWESOME!

    Thanks,
    GeoffreyG

    Thanks to all for solving this problem. I think that WP should immediately add this patch to the latest version as i bet that there are thousands of users with the same problem.

    Till next time ??

    wordpressn00b77

    (@wordpressn00b77)

    Exact same thing happened to me. I cannot bring up my admin page either, though, so I don’t see any way to install the plugin. Guess I will try reinstalling the older version.

    From now on, I am going to wait a significant amount of time before running an upgrade.

    wordpressn00b77

    (@wordpressn00b77)

    Amazingly, after refreshing I was able to log into my dashboard again, I installed the plugin and it fixed the site! what a relief.

    However, now none of my linked images are showing up, how do I fix that?

    fivexs

    (@fivexs)

    You can’t wordpressn00b77, it’s a small price to pay to get things to work nowadays ?? Naah, really i can maybe help you. Just how have you linked the images?

    daniel6683

    (@daniel6683)

    Hi, I solved the question the other way.

    I run wordpress in windows server 2003.

    I applied a “patch” in /wp-includes/canonical.php

    The file say:

    “Prevents redirection for feeds, trackbacks, searches, comment popup, and
    * admin URLs. Does not redirect on IIS, page/post previews, and on form data.”

    So, I changed two lines, cause the wordpress must identify the IIS and not use canonical redirect.

    Lines:

    line 38: global $wp_rewrite, $is_iis7, $wp_query, $wpdb, $is_IIS;
    line 40: if ( $is_IIS || is_trackback() || is_search() || is_comments_popup() || is_admin() || !empty($_POST) || is_preview() || is_robots() || ( $is_iis7 && !iis7_supports_permalinks() ) )
    return;

    The bold is where I changed the original code.
    For the moment is a fast solution. But the wordpress team will need revise in future releases.

    rvirtue

    (@rvirtue)

    @daniel6683: You nailed the actual logic error. However, the is_iis7 testing is handled by the iis7_supports_permalinks() function itself. Line 40 of canonical.php should therefore test for $is_IIS and, if so, whether it supports permalinks as follows:

    if ( is_trackback() || is_search() || is_comments_popup() || is_admin() || !empty($_POST) || is_preview() || is_robots() || ( $is_IIS && !iis7_supports_permalinks() ) )

    Hello All,

    After my previous post, it looks like I’m still seeing a similar problem to wordpressn00b77, so it looks like the fix only half works!! When I try to click any links to posts, I’m taken back to the home page, and not the post page that the URL shows. Page links still work though, it just seems to be Post links that are broken for me.

    I’ve tried the fixes to canonical.php file that daniel6683 and rvirtue describe, and it does fix the original problem of the home page not loading, but it does not fix the problem of links not working.

    Are there any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    GeoffreyG

    daniel6683

    (@daniel6683)

    @rvirtue: Your observation is correct! Thanks!
    GeoffreyG, I’m having more problems too.
    Seems like have more fixes to do!

    potluc

    (@potluc)

    I crashed on 3.1 auto upgrade. Admin is also ‘gone’ – so how do I fix this not being able to get into admin to do anything – 3 years work down to drain!!

    Nunique

    (@nunique)

    Thanks guys was able to access the admin console and install the plugin front end back up and running – no data lost so far ??

    @ Potluc

    type in https://[your site address]/wordpress/wp-admin.

    PS don’t include the brackets… this should open up your login screen enter username and password and it should bring up your dashboard.

    Good luck
