There is a page I dropped an album into. The album contains 1 other album and 4 galleries. Loading the page, everything displays except for the thumbnail for one of the galleries. Has a tiny broken image icon and then the normal text/title link to the gallery. All other items in the album show just fine.

Looking at the source, it shows src=””/> for that image.

All of the thumbnails within that gallery are working. I even regenerated them using the bulk tool just in case I was losing my mind and then chose to recover from backups. The image still shows as broken for just that one gallery.

I have tried clearing the cache for both the site and the browser, tried in other browsers and devices, and it was all the same. For some reason, it isn’t generating a thumbnail for that gallery’s main thumb.

Any ideas on why this would be? I don’t want to have to delete the gallery and rebuild it as it has 560 images in it (*gasp*), but this has boggled me enough that I finally had to ask.

Update: I went into gallery settings and chose another preview thumbnail. I tried going back to whatever was selected before and it then worked and hasn’t done anything odd since? *shrug*

  • Hi JH…as a fellow user, I can point to a couple of things to try to help narrow down the problem…

    a. In the gallery with the broken image, can you change the cover photo? You may have already tried that but it isn’t mentioned in your description. If another image is also broken, then you know if the problem is the image or the gallery.

    b. If it’s the gallery, one of the most common problems is an extra odd character somewhere in the file chain i.e. a space that’s not a simple space, a special character “!]* etc…

    c. If it’s the image (i.e. it works with another image as the cover), then I would guess it is EITHER the special character in a filename somewhere OR the metadata for that image (not necessarily the visible metadata) OR something with the image itself. You could try deleting that image, open it on your PC in something that can strip all metadata, and reupload + regenerate the size.

No guarantees any of those will help, but it might narrow down the problem…

    Hello PolyWogg,

Thanks for chiming in with the input.

    A) I was able to change it. This was mentioned in the “Update” part at the end of the post. I had added that bit in minutes after the initial post. Only I referred to it as “preview thumbnail” as I believe that it was it is referred to.

    B) All file names contain basic alpha-numeric characters. I made sure of that before they were introduced to the previous gallery system that managed everything years ago that had even worse limitations.

    C) I couldn’t say for sure since all names are basic characters. Nothing special. And since I switched it to another thumbnail and then switched it back and it suddenly worked *shrug*.

At this point, I am thinking it was a glitch in the Matrix since all caching scenarios had already been approached before changing the selected thumbnails to and back.

    Hi @jh20001,

Great to hear that this one got resolved in the meantime and thanks a bunch to Paul for his always valuable input as a fellow NextGen Gallery user.

Well, I don’t think that we can find much at this time being now that the gallery preview works but usually that would point to a missing image ( that would happen even in case of deleting and re-uploading the same image ) so perhaps something similar to this case has occurred.
