random tiled mosaic is upscaling images

    Hi. I want to use the “random order” “tiled mosaic” jetpack gallery on my website. It seems to be working great for the most part, but every once and a while one or two images are upscaled – which won’t work for me. All my uploaded images have a max-dimension 800px, but sometimes the Jetpack gallery upscales an image to >800px (the largest I saw was 1060px). It usually happens on the last image, when the algorithm letting one image take up the whole column, but it occasionally happens mid-gallery. Please see the site https://www.sararawlinson.com/shop/testing/ – as the images are randomly loaded, you might need to reload a few times until it happens. It’s always happened for me on the 3rd reload at the latest. I’d love any advice people can give here! Many thanks in advance! Cheers, Sara

    Hey there, @srawlo!

    Thank you for reaching out to us about this, and for giving us details on what you’re seeing.

    I refreshed your site over a dozen times, and was able to replicate what you were referring to:

    This is happening because the images for this gallery have widely varying dimensions. When the Gallery places three smaller images side-by-side, it is then “forced” into picking one large image below them, because of the combination of images you have.

    You can consider:

    – replacing your images with higher-resolution versions, or;
    – using a different Gallery setting, such as “Squares” or “Circles”

    Thanks for the reply, but hrm not quite what I was after! Might there be a way that I can force a minimum number of columns to =2, for example?

    Yes! You can specify a number of columns with our other Gallery options, such as Thumbnail Grid:

    Mosaics, by definition, are unable to specify a specific number of columns. They are an assortment of thumbnails with varied dimensions, and often feature a differing number of columns throughout the gallery. ??
