I just did a backup of a site and got errors when I restored the backup. Based on the errors, I explored and noticed that the file it was looking for (random_bytes_dev_urandom.php) didn’t get included in the back up.

It was on the original site, and wasn’t listed in the exclusions.

Can you tell me why this might happen?

    Thanks.

    Hey there –

Sorry you’ve experienced issues. I haven’t seen that happen before and would have several questions to work through on troubleshooting this preliminarily:

    1. Is that the only file that was missing?
    2. And was it in the root of the site?
    3. If not what was the path to the file?
    4. And nothing else was excluded within that path?
    5. What is this file from? A plugin, theme?
    6. And the source for that plugin wasn’t added after the backup was taken?

Beyond those questions, also look at the location of the file and then work through the exclusions functionality to ensure you can see the file and it is included there. Maybe it was a glitch, maybe it was also inadvertently included within another exclusion.

Let me know what you find!

Just encountered the problem again — oddly, I see that in the Excludes area it’s listed as Excluded in the Status column of the Your Site section (when I navigate to it), but it’s not listed in the Currently Excluded section above that (so I can’t choose the “Stop excluding” link that other excluded files have listed). I don’t see why it would be excluded? Nothing in .htaccess about it. Could something else be triggering an exclusion somehow?

    In answer to your questions:
    1. The only one that I’ve noticed so far.
    2. No
    3. /wp-includes/random_compat/
    4. Not that I see, no — all the other files in that folder are being backed up.
    5. It’s a core WP file.
    6. Sorry, I don’t understand that question.

    Thanks for any insight/guidance!

Just noticed this same thing happening on another site, too.

And on one more site. The first 2 sites are on one host, the third site is on a different host.

Are you able to get a screenshot of the exclusion? If it is a core WP file you can just pull a new version from the latest WP release so you have it, but I don’t understand why it is excluding it if you haven’t explicitly set that exclusion. The fact that it is happening with additional sites makes me want to check my own test installation now, which I also think I’ll do ??

We can continue this conversation in our dedicated support channel so you’re able to send me the screenshot – just email the screenshot and some identifying information about the problem (to jog my memory) to [email protected] – or send me a ticket directly via your admin if you’d prefer.

Thanks and I’m sorry for the frustration!

Yes, I can get a screenshot (just grabbed 2 for you). And I have no problem grabbing the core file (thanks) — it’s just an extra step it would be nice to not have to take.

    (Message sent to your email.)

    Thanks Kat!
