Hello – I searched this forum and found one other person with this issue but there was not a response. I have enabled under SEO –> Advanced –> Permalinks the option to redirect media files to their parent page or post, under “Redirect attachment URLs to parent post URL.” I am in the process of attaching media files to pages and posts.

However when I find these attachments in Google that are now attached to pages / posts, instead of re-directing to the parent page / post they go to my site’s 404 page not found page. I have tried saving permalinks under WordPress settings.

Is there something else I can try to get this to work? Help please!
    Thanks!
    Rob

    Hello @goldengate,

Redirecting media URLs only works when an image/media is attached to a post. You can attach images to posts in the media section. This guide explains more (See Why Is It Not Working?): https://kb.yoast.com/kb/redirect-image-attachment-urls/

Hi thanks for the response! Actually before I posted the original message I attached all the media to posts… (everything was unattached prior). That has not helped the urls to re-direct. You can google “Henthorne calle” to see a whole slew of them like the one above.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, we are unable to reproduce the issue on a fresh WordPress installation. Therefore, we think this is an issue specific to your site. Can you try and gather as much information for us as possible? Please perform the following:
    1. Check for conflicts.
    2. Check for JavaScript errors with your console.
If you find any JavaScript errors related to Yoast SEO or if there is a conflict with a plugin or a theme, you can create a new GitHub issue for our developers. Please report the issue to a third party developer as well.
If you didn’t find any conflicts or errors, we think the issue is specific to your site. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.

I believe in this case the Enfold theme has created additional media pages that aren’t necessarily attachment pages. I did the above Health Check and it’s not a plugin conflict or a WordPress configuration issue. The pages throw 404 errors so I assume at some point Google Index will drop them. The media attachment pages, which are different pages, do indeed re-direct.

I spoke too soon… this media is attached and is not re-directing:

    Hello,

Could you please try to detach and reattach the image to the post by following the steps here — https://kb.yoast.com/kb/redirect-image-attachment-urls/

Please make sure that the redirect attachment URL to parent post setting is set to redirect as well.

If the issue persists, we advise you to create a github issue here — https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new

Setting to resolved as there’s no further reply.

All the images are attached and re-attached. Permalinks are refreshed.

Issue is NOT resolved. Media attachment pages are either going to a 404 page or not re-directing at all, even with all plugins and theme disabled.

I feel a little stupid here… After working and working on this, I just noticed tonight that the permalink for the media file DOES re-direct to the attachment page, but the file URL does not, it just displays the media file. I had assumed the file URL is the same as the permalink since both are in http format.

Can you tell me what the difference is, and will Google index the file url?

    Thanks much!!!!
