help a noob–am I doing it wrong?

Using newest versions of bbpress, BuddyPress, WordPress.
I want users to be able to “follow” me so that their BP notifications, and emails, tell them whenever I do anything. They need to be nudged/reminded of the things I do, since they aren’t active on the site as regularly as would be ideal.
This plugin sounds perfect. After installing it, I see all the menu revisions described in the documentation: but it seems to have no actual effects! My test user is following me–but that status has no other consequences.
What does it MEAN to follow someone? What should be the default notifications/emails somebody gets if they follow me? Or am I misunderstanding the whole concept?
(I understand it’s meant to be similar to BP Friends, which I have turned off as suggested, but–well–I’ve never understood how that’s supposed to work either and the documentation is unhelpful.)
