  • Basically, once everything is backed up (steps 1-3), you will need to delete all of the WordPress core files (except the ones outlined in step 7) in your site’s WordPress folder via FTP. Then you will want to upload the WordPress core files from a fresh copy of WordPress to that same folder via FTP (only upload the files that are not already there, for example, do not upload these files from the fresh copy of WordPress: wp-content, wp-config.php, etc.). Once you have the new files in place, just visit yoursite.com/wp-admin to begin the update script.

I hope that helped make the process of updating of the actual files easier to understand.

Since you are updating 4.2 (probably to the latest 4.2.2), you don’t need to do the incremental updating as suggested in the link you referenced.

Instead, just try MANUAL updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones.

Read the Manual Update directions first.

If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong.

Thank you very much for your responses=)

So far I downloaded the wordpress files onto my computer. The only files I copied to the server were the wp-contents and the wp-includes. I still can’t seem to access my site via wordpress back end. Not sure what I am missing=/ So wp-contents was not supposed to be overwritten?

    Please advise.

    Thanks a million!

    – Check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message. If you need help locating them, ask your hosting provider to help you with that.

    Hello=)

So my files seem to be fine. The main folders that I updated were the wp-includes and the wp-admin.

I checked the error logs and it says it is giving me some buddypress issue (all plugins are inactive):

PHP Warning: Creating default object from empty value in /home/……/public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-template.php on line 487

I contacted my hosting provider, but they said they do not provide wordpress support. They are not being helpful. =/

    Hi

My WordPress site went live last week – all good with the site – however since the site went live I have not been able to access my WP Admin to edit my local files.
I have tried to access my dashboard/admin panel to edit my site by username password and also localhost/wp-admin also mysite/wp-admin etc etc.
    All to no avail.
I have went to php my admin panel changed the username and password and altered wp-config to match the password username on phpmy admin.
I have tried the username and password on C panel my sql –

    All to no avail.

I have received various error messages like Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at https://localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forum

I am used localhost and my site as the host name.

I have contacted my host who informed me that as the files are local files they could not help.

So as things stand I have a site up and running but cannot edit files through access wrodpress admin,

I would really appreciate any help as I seem to be going in circles.

    Many thanks

    Hi Yemthat3,
