In the newest version of wordpress for .org how do you insert a read more tag? I no longer see the button for read more with the block formatting options, I tried installing a plugin for read more but nothing new showed up. I am using a free theme called sparkling. It used to be automatic but after the update to the new wordpress it is no longer automatic

  • You can add a read more block which you will find by searching ‘more’ in the block library. Alternatively you can click to ‘add block’ and it’s under ‘layout elements’.

I really don’t like that the “read more” is now a block that can only fit between paragraphs. I much prefer the inline style of “read more” tags. Maybe I just don’t know how to do it yet, but dropping it inline was cool because you could split a sentence right at the exact spot you thought a reader might want to know what comes next. It’s harder to hook a reader after they have completed reading a paragraph. Much better to hook them on a cliff hanger in the middle of a sentence.

If you really need to do that, you can do so.

For the paragraph where you want to insert the inline more tag, click it and then click the three vertical dots menu in the toolbar above it. From there, select Edit as HTML. It will convert the paragraph into a raw code form.

Then, just insert your <!--more--> where you want it.

Don’t convert it back to a Visual paragraph or you can lose the tag.

With this method, you can have just that one paragraph in the ugly code form, but leave the rest of the post editing in the nicer Visual editor view.

As an experiment try placing a quote block ahead of the Read More block and place your teaser text in that. It is an acceptable artifact in publishing so won’t be out of place in the full article.
