We have Classic Editor installed on many websites. We noticed that the Read More tag displays the actual code fine in the editor, but the words (and of course the link/function) do not render on the website. Any clue what may cause this? These are all custom Themes by us.

  • Hi @icommllc this depends how you are trying to use the read more tag. Are you able to provide more information about where you want to have the read more function, please feel free to share a link to the page. This will make it easier to narrow down the issue.

We are just adding the tag in the editor. On https://www.iu13.org/about/, we have it added to the first editor (which is called within our ACF field. See here: https://www.screencast.com/t/1O0KmmipfcK It should be appearing here: https://www.screencast.com/t/FbKeYqOT (this was just a test, not where we would actually use it). When you view the source, it shows here: https://www.screencast.com/t/oWhfrOOa1 But nothing renders on the web page.

Thank you for the screenshots @icommllc and for sharing a direct link. I noticed that the link you shared is to an individual page (not an archive or posts).

Maybe I am not following but I do no think the Read More tag is supposed to work on individual pages and posts, it is only meant to work in post archives.

Could you please provide a little more context on what you are trying to achieve?

I never knew it is not for regular pages. The goal is to shorten content in a zone/region of a page and then expand the content. This allows the user to see another zone on page load or as they scroll. My team did achieve this years ago on https://emillionsart.com/artists/larry-aarons/ (the Biography tab). Before: https://www.screencast.com/t/d0SQf2wP After: https://www.screencast.com/t/di4okcvLF My current developers could not figure out how they did that. So there is no way to inject a Read More tag in a content zone of a page to collapse the content?

Hi @icommllc – thanks for providing a link to that page. The “Show more” button there is using a combination of JavaScript and CSS to get that show/hide effect. You could either ask a web developer to copy over that code to your new site, or you might try looking for a plugin (like this one) that does the same thing. In fact, it’s possible that the code on that site is being generated by a plugin, so you might want to first try visiting the Plugins page on that site to see if you can find it in the list.

I’ll go ahead and mark this as resolved since this isn’t an issue with the Classic Editor.
