Really part of 4.9 now?

Yes, this was a surprise to me.

I opened a Trac ticket to discuss transient housekeeping again but was pointed to this ticket – https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/41699. This is a discussion about the Cron job for housekeeping them, where a daily run was added in 4.9.

The Cron is hooking into this code which is, indeed, performing housekeeping… https://github.com/WordPress/WordPress/blob/master/wp-includes/option.php#L840

However, I’m open to being told this isn’t the case and I’ve mis-interpreted what I’ve read.

I think this would have been worth a mention a WordPress changelog.

I saw that message too (about the Transient Cleaner plugin not being necessary any more. Is that true?!?! I tried to check the links you provided, but it still is not clear to me. Tnx

Here is what we do know…

1. There is now a function in WordPress, added in 4.9, that housekeeps expired transients
2. That Trac ticket refers to adding a daily run of this new function

I’ve not had a chance to test it but, it certainly appears to be the case.

I’ve checked the WordPress code, they really added something.

So are you saying it is OK to remove the Transient Cleaner plugin? I’d rather leave it in place, just in case!

It won’t do any harm but is probably duplicating effort. I’ll do some testing soon to absolutely confirm all of this.
