• I’m running WordPress 2.6.2.

I recently figured out what was crashing my WordPress. When a certain author wrote a post, it would redirect everything back to my host’s 404 page.

I narrowed it down to one word in the post that was causing all the trouble.

Whenever anyone on my WordPress posts the word “masturbat” along with anything following it, it cripples my installation.

I have done extensive trial and error, adding letters here and there, taking away from both the beginning and end of the word, and it is “masturbat” that crashes it.

Could someone else with 2.6.2 test this to see if it’s only my problem?

  • I’m running 2.6.2 and ran a test to see if I could replicate your issue.

When I added that word (or any combo of it) my WP contuinued to run just fine.

What plugin’s do you have installed. Try disabling them to see if that helps.

I’m running no plugins, and had 2 inactive ones, Akismet and Hello Dolly. I deleted them just to make sure, and it still crashes with “masturbat” is presented”

This even happens when you enter it in the search query, which is a better way of testing since it doesn’t stay crashed until I remove it like it does with a post.

If you want to test this out too, my WP is running at https://www.electricjesus.net

Does anyone know of a way to set WP to log PHP activity for debugging? that would help.

1st guess: mod_security as implemented by your host — see if you cannot replicate using other words. I’ll bet you can.

Check in the WP Control Panel under Settings > Discussion to see if any words are being blocked.

    Settings > Discussion

thats not going to affect searching.

My word. Okay, according to the host, my site was being messed with because I used naughty words. Further testing whooami’s advice about mod_security, when I cursed like a sailor into my search box I was shut down completely.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I’m getting paid hosting. This is ridiculous.

If you feel like you might use a naughty word sometime in the forseeable future, don’t use awardspace.com for hosting.

I’ve always heard you could go blind from that, but I didn’t know it would shut down your site.
