Getting “ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.” This occurs when reCAPTCHA is enabled. When reCAPTCHA is disabled, I can log in like normal. This happens with all other plugins disabled. I am on the latest version of all plugins and WordPress. This issue occurs for all other users including WPEngine who were able to duplicate the issue.

Hi?@kalmarnet, thanks for getting in touch!

Have you hidden your WordPress login pages with a plugin? Some plugins and operations require the default WordPress paths so it could be worth disabling any plugins that modify this location and see if the authentication issue gets solved.

Currently, Wordfence’s 2FA and reCAPTCHA only work with default login/registration pages for WordPress and WooCommerce so custom paths and pages will likely encounter problems such as this.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

We also encountered this and disabling Recaptcha fixed it. We are not using any custom login paths or any plugins that mess with login.

There’s been no change on the site and the recaptcha has been turned on for a couple of years for it to fail just in the last few days.

    Hi @avocadesign,

As per the forum guidelines below, please open your own topic, and we would be glad to assist you:

“Unless users have the exact same version of WordPress on the same physical server hosted by the same hosts with the same plugins, theme, and configurations, then the odds are the solution for one user will not be the same for another. For this reason, we recommend people start their own topics.”

    Thanks,

    Mark.
