• Revert back to 5.0.5 and you will be A-OK. The best way to do this without losing forms is via FTP.

Disclaimer – If you do delete the existing plugin via the WordPress Plugin screen, be prepared to potentially rebuild your forms and re-enter your ReCaptcha keys.

Someone else mentioned WP Rollback as an option too

    https://en-ca.www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-rollback/

May save you some time and effort – however, read their disclaimer first to avoid data loss.

    CONTACT FORM 7 – v5.1

Why would they release an update that’s not working?

Yes! I reverted back to 5.0.5 it works fine but still outdated yes?

Love the plugin – hope we get a quick fix!

Thank you for the link! 5.1 is a pile of hot garbage; it’s completely broken

Outdated does not necessarily mean it’s a bad thing – in this case they swapped one API (v3 instead of v2) and accidentally broke millions of sites. Apple and Microsoft have done similar things, we’ll get a fix eventually.

    Well that depends on interpretation?

If CF7 Is outdated that means we are vulnerable to hacks.

Im content with the rollback for now and will wait for v5.1.2

I prefer the v2 Robot as opposed to a sticky recaptcha v3

Thanks, rollback fixed it for me.

    You left out a step…

    Step 1. Deactivate CF7
Step 2. Via FTP, rename the CF7 Folder or delete it
Step 3. Unzip the above link, then upload the folder to your wp-content/plugins folder
    Step 4. Activate
Step 4a. Repeat 1-4 40 times, then go to step 5
    Step 5. Drink Coffee

    Yeah… sorry @billsmithem, my bad.

I actually am riding it out right now by not updating… I have no inclination to repeat this on hundreds of sites ??

@koppit, if the update had been properly documented (as I’ve seen many others do when they make breaking changes), I’d have never updated it in the first place.

I use WinSCP for ftp communicataion with my wordpress website. I do see any ability in it to access the indicated zip file and download it to my computer so that I can unzip it. Any help would be appreciated.

On the server it would be in a folder, not zipped up. The folder is likely called contact-form-7. Unzip the file that you downloaded with the older version of CF7 into a folder. On the remote FTP, rename that contact-form-7 folder to something else, or delete it, then upload the new folder that you just unzipped. You should be good to go at that point.

Rolling back to version 5.0.5 did it for mee also.
(luckily i did not have to re-create the forms and Keys)

    – placed the 2 plugin folders of CF7 in plugins, renamed the one to version_505 before upload
    – WP > plugins shows 2 contact form versions.
    – deactivate 5.1 (no need to remove)
    – activate 5.0.5
