reCaptcha v.2 reconsideration request
-
Hi Takayuki,
have been using CF7 plugin for years and really love it.
I know you are hesitant about adding reCaptcha v.2 functionality back again but wanted to bring to your attention my considerations about this.
As you probably know ‘google-recaptcha’ script needs to be enqueued to every page of the site in order for Google to understand user intentions in sending a message through the form. I did some testing myself and find out that if you deregister/dequeue the script and load it only where necessary (e.g.: form present in ‘contact’ page) 3 out of 5 messages are considered as spam.
Now, the reason of loading the script strictly where necessary is, well.. PageSpeed score. A website of mine increased its PageSpeed score from 84 to 91 after deregistering the ‘google-recaptcha’ script and loading CF7 script/CSS only where necessary.
reCaptcha v.2 instead, allows you to load the script only where necessary without false positive risks (unless one cannot distinguish cars from traffic lights).
‘Privacy’ of users visiting your site is also better protected with reCaptcha v.2 (European GDPR law is quite strict about that).
Also consider that Google itself stated that support for reCaptcha v.2 is ‘not going away’. They will continue to mantain and update it.
For these reasons to me reCaptcha v.3 is not an upgrade from v.2 but is more like an alternative.
Now, I know there are plugins out there which allows you to restore reCaptcha v.2 functionality in CF7. But I don’t consider them as a clean solution. Also, I think that the reliability of a plugin which strictly relies on another might not be that good. What if CF7 code changes and the plugin used to bring back reCaptcha v.2 is not quickly updated to reflect/accomodate the changes?
In conclusion, I really hope you will change your mind in future and decide to put the reCaptcha v.2 back again. That’s my two cents anyway ??
