• I guess I’m just wondering if there was a funny glitch that happened and if anyone else got this, too.

I posted a new entry to a particular site I manage last night. I woke up to find that, a couple hours later, I had received an email from wordpress letting me know I was now subscribed to that blog.

SUBJECT: [Subscribe] Confirmed Subscription to Posts on ########

Congratulations, you are now subscribed to the site [########] (https://www.#######.com) and will receive an email notification when a new post is made.

(Note: The actual email had the name of the site in there, I’m just replacing it with ####### for privacy here.)

This is a site which does not have any sort of front-facing way to subscribe to the wordpress emails; only mailchimp and feedburner RSS would be visible to anyone. I don’t know how this could have happened… it’s just really weird.

  • I think this might be it under settings/discussion. Make sure these settings are unchecked.

Thanks… so, I had already looked into that and because I was viewing it signed in as admin, it didn’t show me that option so I dismissed it as a possibility. Your comment made me look at it again, signed out, and saw that it was there.

Then I noticed that a person who commented on last night’s post did so at the same time I got my email notification. And looking further, found that she had indeed become a subscriber.

It’s still a little confusing why her signing up also signed me up, but maybe it’s because she was the first one to do so and it triggered something in the code to automatically add the site’s administrator? That doesn’t sound right but it’s my only guess.

But thank you for helping me figure out at least some sort of connection.

Hmm… are you using a cache plugin?

    W3 Total Cache is active.
(WP Super Cache is installed but inactive)

I’ve had a similar issue pop-up where the page gets cached as the logged in user. So everyone can see the admin menu bar at the top, the edit button, etc.

I think you can fix this by taking a trip through the W3TC settings, reading the tool tips, to make sure that you don’t have a box checked which is caching the administrators visits. Then just clear the cache and this issue should go away. It takes quite a bit of fiddling around to get settings to work right for your server with W3TC. But once you’ve got it, it’s a game changer.

    Interesting…

That sounds horrific; having a regular user being able to see the admin bar. Can they actually go ahead and make changes?!

Welp, I definitely don’t “got it” as neither of these caching plugins help my wordpress sites run any faster, but I’m pretty sure the blame is on Dreamhost’s shared server.

I did just tick on the boxes which tell the plugin not to cache admin visits. So, thank you for the tip.

No, they can’t. They were able to click on things in the menu but any time they tried to go to the admin area that was “no cache” zone and just took them to the /wp-login.php area. Mostly, it was just annoying because I had like 25 people tell me they saw the admin toolbar in a day.

Glad you found those settings. Yeah, getting those setting right is a pain. You’ll get it.

Right on! I am glad to I could kind-of point you in a good direction.
Im not going to lie it gave me a little boost to my ego this morning. Thanks!
Sorry I do not know about the other. Good Luck!
