you can run query_posts to get the recent post excerpt

consider a plugin https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/posts-in-page/

although, in general, using a page template would allow more freedom for formatting the recent posts.

Thanks for the replies to my question. I don’t like using plugins unless I have to so I just used a modified version of my page.php template. I’m just have to play around with the code a bit now to get it working how I want it.
