    Hi there,

I sell bespoke beds. Currently, my clients have to go through a series of steps in a bespoke measurement tool which recommends a bed, sized to fit them. The bed with their size is a Woocommerce product variation. I would like to change this flow so that they buy the bed style first and submit their measurements later so that I get the sale immediately.

Can anyone recommend how this could be done? My initial thought is to offer them a generic (unsized bed) and then once they have taken their measurements, somehow update their order. The complexity is that currently, once they buy a bed, the order is sent to a third party shipping company. So the website would somehow need to keep the order back until the measurements / updated order has been received.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

I wouldn’t do that at all. I would use a form, like Gravity Forms or Contact 7 and I would add a snippet to collect those measurements right there and then. You could even do a search for an app that possibly has custom meta fields that you can add to your products to allow the user to enter everything you need.

I think Product Add Ons for only $49 will suit you just fine.

    Thanks for your reply!

Understood, but I am looking to capture the sale. Sometimes the customer wants the product but does not have the facility to measure at that moment. So I need a solution where they can “buy now, measure later”

Ah, I read your OP differently. You could add a form on your site for them to come back to and the fields have the measurements and a field for the order number, name etc.

The other way would be to add a custom tab in their account if you’re planning on making users create an account on order to place an order.

Thanks Stef. Do you know whether you could link that form to the original order so that when they submit, I could update their original order based on the form’s submission?

With some custom coding you could have the form populate to the order in backend yes. If I come across a plugin that can do everything you’re needing I’ll reply.

One of my colleagues here might know of something else too.

    Hello there,

My recommendation is to keep it as simple as possible for the users.

For the most part, they do not like complex buying experiences.

Kindly note if you would like to edit the order, it will need to be in Pending or on hold status, then once it is edited, switch back to the correct status.

Thanks both. Do you have any recommendations on where you would need to start and the things that would need to change? I would be surprised if there is a plugin out there to do this.

I guess it is a fancy way of allowing the customer to change their order once they have paid.

It’s definitely a unique request. That’s for sure. In my 25+ years of doing eCommerce I haven’t seen one like this.

However, I’d start by finding a developer that can custom code a child theme with your requests. As my colleague @ihereira noted, the order would have to automatically be set to “Hold” or “Pending” rather than “Processing” which is the default status.

There are plenty on Devs on Up Work, Fiverr and we even have a link on WooCommerce.com for developers as well as our Slack community.

Just be careful when hiring someone. Knowledge is Power.
