Recommended Theme or Plugins for site with galleries ?

I have a client who creates chalkboards for bars and restaurants, and as a consequence is always passing me new images to add to his galleries. IS there a best practice way of handling images in galleries from an SEO point of view with WordPress ? And if there is are there any products I should be using in the way of templates or plugins to best execute these requirements ?
