Recurring Events in sidebar

We would like to use the recurring event functionality, however, if we add a recurring event, it shows multiple times in the sidebar widget. Is there a way to use recurring events, but not have the sidebar widget pull multiple listings of it?

For example, if a recurring event lasts 10 days and our sidebar widget is set to show the next 3 events, it displays the same recurring event for each of the three event items listed.
