• I know this topic has been talked about before, but I just wanted to make sure and also ask some additional questions. So I am wanting to redesign an existing website into a wordpress site while having the old site still active. We are in the middle of switching hosts to hostgator.com. Would it be easier to just build the site on the new host and transfer the domain name that way I don’t have to worry about the old site? or would it be better to build the wp site in a subdirectory under the current host and move it all together once it’s finished? Sorry, I’m a newbie, please bear with me.

  • If it was me, I would actually favour a third option: move your existing site to your new web host first, then start development in WordPress in a subfolder. I like that better than Choice 2 because it avoids any problems with WordPress as you change hosting environments. Of course, it does mean taking on the risk of the old site not working properly on your new web hosting. But you can work through that during testing, before moving the domain to the new hosting.

The big factor that you haven’t mentioned is how much change occurs on your site. There are ways around it, but there is generally a 72 hour “change freeze” when you change where a domain name “points”.

As background on the subfolder approach, you may want to read my post here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/how-to-move-wp?replies=4
