    Current url structure is:
    old.domain.com/pages/pagename.aspx?ID=5
    New url structure is:
    domain.com/new-page
I have the simple redirect plug in set up to redirect to the new urls. What’s the best dns practice to ensure requests for the old urls get redirected to the new?

Redirections at the individual page level do not happen in DNS.

It looks like there’s no easy way to say ?ID=x maps to a specific page on the new site, so you’d probably need to build a long list of individual redirects and put them in your VirtualHost definition or in .htaccess. If you use 301 redirects, Google will eventually fix up all of its links.
