Redirect Old HTML Page to New WP Page
-
I have an old HTML site that has a WP blog installed in a subdirectory. I want to convert the entire site to WP.
The site, https://www.guitarist.com, has a few main sections (directories):
guitarist.com/classical/
guitarist.com/flamenco/
guitarist.com/blog/Some of the sections have subsections:
guitarist.com/classical/sheet-music/
guitarist.com/classical/beginners/
guitarist.com/classical/beginners/books/
guitarist.com/classical/beginners/guitars/
guitarist.com/flamenco/beginners/Each upper directory has an HTML “homepage” that functions as a Table of Contents for its subdirectories.
I need to keep the SEO “juice” from these 20-year-old webpages. These pages usually rank in the top 5 for searches like “classical guitar” and “flamenco guitar.” Don’t want to lose that!
I don’t see a way to change the new pages’ permalinks to any directory higher than https://www.guitarist.com/blog. For example, the permalink for a new “classical” WP page can’t be any higher than https://www.guitarist.com/blog/classical/. I need it to be https://www.guitarist.com/classical.
So the only way seems to be a 301 redirect for each old HTML page, directing visitors to the new WP page. This should keep all the juice.
Am I missing anything? Is this the best way? Are there any drawbacks I should know about before I commit to this work?
