Dear Wordfence-Support. At first let me thank you for such a great plugin.

I have one single problem with it: I can’t use a 301 redirect plugin. AFAIK they change the .htaccess-File (I’m really not sure if it is so). An also AFAIK Wordfence secures this file!?

I updated my site (created it whole new) and all links from the past are now deadlinks. For this I want to use a 301-redirect plugin to fix this deadlinks. But no plugin works, I tried 4 so far.

Also when I add the redirect rules manually in the .htaccess-file it does not work. Often it says “Too many redirects”.

Can you please help me with that?

    Thanks in advance,
    Vincent from Germany

    Hi @joshivince,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Normally, such issues may occur due to plugin misconfigurations, plugin conflicts caused by Wordfence or other plugins, or Wordfence blocking actions by other plugins. On .htaccess, Wordfence does not block any changes made to the file by WordPress or other plugins. However, if the changes are flagged as part of a scan, you will be prompted and can choose to ignore them as you’re aware of the origin of those changes.

I recommend that you disable the Wordfence plugin and check whether the 301 redirects work as expected. If the redirects work with Wordfence disabled, there is a possibility that Wordfence may be blocking actions made by the plugins. To resolve, enable the Firewall learning mode to eliminate the false positives.

From the Wordfence Dashboard click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Once done, configure the redirects and test them. This will help Wordfence learn that these actions are normal and it will allow them in the future. After you have finished configuring and testing the redirects, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting and test to see if the redirects work correctly.

If the too many redirects issue persists with Wordfence disabled, contact your hosting provider for further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Janet

Dear Janet, thanks for your input and help.
I disabled WF and here we are, the 301 redirect plugin is working as expected.

Problem is, that the wordfence installation / website is brand new (2 weeks or so) and within WAF it says it IS STILL in learning mode until 15 April 2022.

So in that case, what should I do? Waiting until 15 April? Doing my redirects as needed and hoping that after learning mode all works? Or just switching immediately the learning mode off and trying to see if the redirect plugin then works?

    Thanks for further help,
    Vincent

Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Hi @joshivince,

Thank you for sending this through. I couldn’t find any errors that could be causing the issue.

For further troubleshooting, enable Wordfence, and switch the firewall from Learning Mode to Enabled and Protecting in Wordfence > Firewall > All Firewall Options. Refresh the page and be sure Wordfence is staying in Enabled and Protecting. After that, confirm if the redirect issue is occurring or not.

If the issue is still occurring, keep Wordfence enabled and try switching to a default theme and see if the issue persists. If the issue does keep occurring, make sure that the redirects are pointing to an https link and not http. Since your site is on https, any redirects that point to the https:// version of the site could potentially result in a redirect issue.

If none of the above work, check Live Traffic to see if any new entries come up while testing the redirects functionality. Make sure it is set to the All Traffic logging mode under Wordfence >Tools > Live Traffic > Live Traffic Options and send over updated error logs from Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Log Files to [email protected] with your forum username as the subject.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,
    Janet.
